Victoria Day 2025: What is Open and Closed in Canada

Victoria Day says the summer season is coming, and on May 19, 2025, many businesses will see frequent or reduced hours, while government offices, schools and certain services will be closed, prompting reminders to call ahead. Most grocery stores and pharmacies will be open, but as the holidays will affect various departments, including mail delivery, library access and shopping malls, mail and garbage collection will still be carried out as planned.

People can hold the annual fireworks display at 10pm on Monday at Toronto’s Ashbridges Bay Park, which will last for 14 minutes. From Emdaabiimok Avenue (earlier known as Lower Coxwell Avenue) to Victoria Park Avenue, fireworks will be visible. According to the RCMP, alcohol is prohibited in Ashbridges Bay.

Toronto police say people can fireworks on their private property by 11 p.m. Victoria Day, but licenses are not allowed in parks, beaches, balconies, streets or parking lots. Bonfires are prohibited in city parks and beaches.

Many roads have been closed throughout the city, which can lead to significant delays. There are restricted parking lots in some areas and police encourage people to use public transportation where possible.

The TTC route will start at 6 a.m. and additional buses will be available on the 22A Coxwell and 92A Woodbine on the Sunday Schedule on Victoria Day. Go Transit will follow its Saturday schedule.
While most grocery chains will be closed on Monday, people are advised to check the store websites as some of them may run for hours. Rabba Fine Foods has confirmed that they are open on Victoria Day.
The St. Lawrence Market, the Toronto History Museum and the city’s public library branches were closed Monday.
With Victoria Day approaching, many of PEI’s businesses will remain open on May 19 or operate within a reduced timeframe. Islanders are advised to call for confirmation of operating hours in advance.

All provincial and municipal government offices will be closed during the holidays. Schools on the island, including Dutch Academy and UPEI, will also be closed.

UPEI’s Chi-Wan Youth Sports Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Canada Post will not deliver or collect mail on Victoria Day. Public libraries will be closed. T3 Transit will follow its regular schedule. The garbage collection through the Island Waste Management Company will be carried out on the basis of the island.

All PEI Winery Control Board stores will be open during normal hours. PEI marijuana opens until 6 pm

Royal Crossing Mall will be closed at 5 p.m. and Federal Court Mall will be closed on holidays. County Fair Shopping Center in the summer will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Walmart store will maintain normal hours. Foodland locations will be open until 5 p.m., and the Atlantic supermarket locations will also be open during normal hours.

The Cooper Food Market in Belfast will operate during its normal time. Global grocery stores in Charlottetown will reduce working hours, from noon to 5pm, O’Leary Co-Op will watch holidays, open from 10am to 6pm, Wellington Co-op will maintain normal hours, and Tignish and Souris stores will maintain normal hours. Morel Cooperative will be closed on Monday. All Sobeys locations will be open except for the locations on University Avenue and Allen Street, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All shoppers drug market locations will be normal hours except for Federal Court Mall

“1pm to 5pm at Kensington Pharmacy”

“Kinlock Pharmacy from noon to 5pm”

“Parkerdale Pharmacy from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.”

“Queen Street Pharmacy from noon to 5 p.m.”

“West Royal Pharmacy from noon to 5 pm”

Lawtons Drugs at County Fair Shopping Center will be open from noon to 5pm
