Commuters on national highways and highways need to pay more for their road trips, as the tolls of the National Highway Administration (NHAI) increase on average 4% to 5% of highway sections nationwide.

A highway department official told PTI that revised toll charges were made against motorists on national highways nationwide. NHAI notified all countries of toll hikes on highways and expressways respectively.

According to him, the change in tolls is part of an annual exercise to modify rates related to inflation changes based on the wholesale price index. Every year, it is implemented starting from April 1.

There are about 855 user fee squares on the national expressway network. User fees were levied in 2008 according to the national expressway fee (determining rate and collection) rules. Of these rules, about 675 are publicly funded expenses Plazas, while 180 are franchisees-operated Toll Plazas.

The revised rates will affect commuters on key routes across the country, including Delhi-Meerut earlssways, Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi-Jaipur Expressway among others.
