UPI faces interruption again, users report payment interruption

The unified payment interface (UPI) faced another power outage on Saturday, causing digital payment interruptions across India.
According to data from Downdetector tracking interruptions, 1,923 users reported service outages at 12:27 pm today. Of these, 76% reported payment failures, while 23% encountered problems related to fund transfers.
Many users go to social media to report that the UPI does not work for them.
This marks the second time UPI faces a power outage this month and the third interruption in the past 18 days. On April 2, UPI experienced temporary damage, and the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates retail payment systems, said the problem was due to delays in the UPI network.
“UPI intermittently declines due to the fluctuations in success rates of some banks. These volatility increases the latency of the UPI network. NPCI has been working closely with them, and UPI has been stable.”
UPI services also fell on March 26, affecting major digital payment platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI transactions account for 83% of all digital transactions in India. The report said UPI transactions soared 4.4 times from 2021 to 2024, reaching 172 billion transactions a year.
