Police said a person was injured in the new violence in the Meshidabad area of West Bengal on Saturday (April 12, 2025).
The incident occurred in Dhulian, the Samserganj neighborhood, which is a Muslim-majority region. They said that during the protests against the WAQF (Amendment) Act, mass violence was conducted on Friday (April 11, 2025).
ADG (Law and Order) said at a press conference in Kolkata that details of the incident are not available yet.
He said local police may not have been involved in the firing incident, “this may have come from the end of the BSF.”
“These are early reports that we need to cross-check,” he said.
However, the injured were taken to the hospital and out of danger, Mr Shamim said.
Following the violence on Friday (11 April 2025), the BSF was deployed in some areas of the region, which has borders with Bangladesh. Mr Shamim said 118 people have been arrested so far for alleged involvement in the violence.
He said that number will increase as the attack continues.
He urged people not to pay attention to rumors on social media and to remain calm.
He said senior officials at the ADG and IG levels are monitoring the situation in Mercidabad on the ground and deploying professional forces to prevent any explosions.
Meanwhile, an official said earlier that a teenage boy who was injured in police fire during a clash in the area’s pristine area was taken to a hospital in Kolkata.
Police Director General (DGP) Rajeev Kumar said in the same press conference that strong actions will be taken against those who are addicted to violence, and men in uniform will do their best to protect the lives and property of innocent citizens.
“The unfortunate incident that happened this morning may have been triggered by the spread of unconfirmed rumors from all sides. I urge people not to pay attention to this provocation, which is obviously a handicraft of wrongdoing,” he said.
“This is a struggle between good and evil. Rumor trafficking must stop. We will ask people not to take laws and orders into their own hands. We assure them that the police will take the most powerful measures to violate the culprit and protect the lives and property of ordinary people.”
