J&K Conference was recessed for 15 minutes after a spokesperson did not allow discussions about WAQF Bill

Spokesperson Abdul Rahim refused to recess for hours after the commotion at Jamu and Kashmir Congress, discussing the WAQF (Amendment) bill of April 7, 2025.

Jamu and Kashmir Parliament were adjourned 15 minutes later, speaker Abdul Rahim, instead of Monday (7 April 2025), ruled that the National Conference (NC)’s adjournment motion (NC) sought discussions on the WAQF (Amendment) bill. All regional parties, including the ruling NC, called the bill “unacceptable.”

This is the first time to be recessed at a budget meeting.

With the House gathering that day, members of the national conference led by Nazir Gurezi and Tanvir Sadiq raised a motion to raise questions to discuss the WAQF law, which was notified to speakers by nine members of North Carolina, Congress and some independent members.

The move, which was opposed by the BJP, led by the leaders of House Sunil Sharma, sparked yelling around, lasting more than two minutes.

Instead, to quote House Rule 58, the adjournment is not allowed because the bill is currently in court. “I can’t be held in the House of Representatives because the matter is judicially abducted.”

The refusal sparked protests from North Carolina, Congress and PDP members who insisted on recess and headed towards the well of the house.

As the commotion continued, the speaker held the house back for 15 minutes.
