On April 23, 2018, renowned astrophysicist Jayant V. Narlikar gave a speech on “Searching Life Outside Earth” at the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) in Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in Thiruvananthapuram.
He talked about the possibility of life outside the planet and the challenge of providing experimental evidence for it. Sometimes he also talks about one of his experiments using a high-altitude balloon conducted in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). One of the three bacteria detected in this experiment has been named Bacillus Isrensis After the Space Agency.
“Sighted Astrophysicist”
In Kerala, Dr. Nalikar died in Pune on May 20 at the age of 86 and is remembered as a scientist who inspired countless young people through his works, lectures and books. In an article on X, former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath remembers that he was “a visionary astrophysicist and outstanding scientific communicator who he has through his famous works (e.g. Lighter gravity and Seven miracles of the universe. ”
Dr Narlikar has visited Kerala several times to attend workshops and conferences that interact with schools and college students. In 2006, the center of the University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), which he founded in 1988, was opened at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). The name was originally called the IUCAA Resource Center and has since been changed to the IUCAA Center for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD).
“It was designed as an inter-university expansion facility that promotes astronomy research. He has visited the center to discuss research programs and collaborations. He visited Cusat in 2016 and 2017. Prior to that, he visited at least once a year,” said Titus Mathew, former Cusat Center, a former Cusat Center professor of CUSAT.
In 2019, Dr. Narlikar visited Thiruvananthapuram to receive a PhD in Science Honors awarded him from the University of Kerala.
