Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured that his government would enact the “Rohis Vimura Act”, a law to eliminate caste-based and identity-based discrimination in educational institutions.
Responding to former Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s letter on social media platform X on April 16, urging the Karnataka government to enact the “Rohis Vimura Act” to ensure no one faces caste-based discrimination in the education system, the chief minister said his government government stood in the business and was determined to enact such a law.
In a post on X, Mr. Siddaramaiah said, “Our government stands firm in its resolve to enact the Rohith Vemula Act in Karnataka — to ensure no student faces discrimination based on caste, class, or religion. We will bring this legislation at the earliest to honour the dreams of Rohith, Payal, Darshan, and countless others who deserved dignity, not exclusion.”
Rahul Gandhi in a letter to Mr. Siddaramaiah urged the Karnataka government to enact the “Rohis Vimura Act”. Rahul Gandhi, taking some examples as an example, highlighted the discrimination BR Ambedkar faced throughout his life, said architects of the Indian Constitution faced “shameful” and needed legislation to ensure that this generation of students did not face such humiliation.
“He told us about his experience at school: ‘I know I am an unshakable, untouchable person affected by certain insults and discrimination. For example, I know that in school I can’t sit among classmates at my level, but I myself sit in a corner,” Mr Rahul Gandhi said.
He further stated in the letter: “It is regrettable that even today, millions of students in Dalit, Adivasi and OBC communities must face this cruel discrimination in our education system.”
