Assam opposition coalition condemns attacks on MP MLA

Guwahati

The coalition of regional and left-right former parties in Assam condemned the attacks by Congress leaders, including MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and MLA Sibamoni Bora, at the Nagaon District on Sunday evening (27 April 2025) in Dhing, Nagaon District.

Axom Sommilito Morcha (Asom) said the incident was a direct result of a culture of political violence, hatred was nurtured by the government led by the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, led by the Bharatiya Janata party.

Alliance Chairman Rajya Sabha member Ajit Kumar Bhuyan and Assam Jatiya Parishad president and alliance secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said on Monday that the state has never been linked to political violence.

“Our political history is marked by healthy competition, competition and friendship. The environment that sees the political opposition as an enemy is what we only read about is about what is happening in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states. Sadly, this culture has been imported into Assam due to the BJP and Himanta Biswa Sarma governments,” they said.

The coalition leaders claimed that the chief minister and Assam police have been encouraging political intolerance in Assam. They believe that if law enforcement took strong and swift action against early sporadic political violence, those incidents would not escalate.

Mr. Bui’an and Mr. Gogoy said: “By trying to prove or incite such incidents, or even cleverly illustrate, the Chief Minister made it clear that there were hidden political motives behind these attacks.”

Assam’s information minister, Pijush Hazarika, rejected allegations that linked the BJP to the dhing incident.

“Preliminary investigations show that the attack originated from a financial dispute, not any political hatred involving the BJP. The area where the incident occurred was mainly a parliamentary stronghold,” he said.

Hazarika noted that the Chief Minister ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, saying: “We call on all to avoid the politicization of political events and hope that such unfortunate events have never been repeated.”

Meanwhile, Assam police determined that Imdadul Islam, who was fired by Congress two days before the incident, was in the attack on Mr. Bodoroy, Ms. Bora and other Congress leaders. EOM
