A social media post by former MLA A. Pradeep Kumar sparked a conversation about maintaining the beauty of Kozhikode’s public space on Sunday (May 11). Kozhikode Corporation took action without delay and cleaned up the relevant public space by May 12 (May 12).

The bus stop at the intersection of the city’s Medical College is a beautifully designed structure created by renowned architects and built at a cost of around Rs 3 to 4 lakh, about five years ago, when Mr. Pradeep was MLA of Kozhikode North. The Gemini Stone structure with a tile roof reminiscent of traditional Kerala architecture, with exquisite paintings on both sides once a source of civic pride. The local automokershaw driver even vowed to protect it.

However, the former MLA’s social media post was shocked a lot, as the accompanying pictures showed that the bus stop was defiled. Even these paintings are covered with posters. The post reads: “It must have been done by some people who have committed to society.

The construction company that designed the structure, De Earth, has promised to restore the bus station to its former glory as part of its 21st anniversary celebration, on condition that authorities ensure its protection forward. “It is necessary to learn to keep public places. We need the public to be proactive on these issues,” Mr. Pradeep said.
