After the Sports Department grants recognition to the IPA, Kimchi pie is in administrative tug of war

New Delhi: Kimchi has now found its space in India almost nearly in India after the Ministry of Sports granted the recently formed Indian Kimchi Association (IPA) status, and has been involved in an administrative turf war that prompted the older All India Kimchi Association (AIPA) to raise objections and threaten legal action.

On April 25, the decision to grant recognition to the IPA accredited decision to qualify it for financial grants and autonomy to regulate, promote and develop a national movement.

“After the body was represented a few days ago, the IPA has been recognized by the ministry,” a sports department official told PTI.

Pickleball, which originated in the United States, combines elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton. It plays in singles and doubles formats and shoots on the court using paddles and a perforated hollow plastic ball, the same size as the doubles badminton, which has a slightly lower net worth.

IPA President Suryaveer Seryhaveer Singh Bhullar posted on Instagram.

AIPA issued a statement questioning the ministry’s move, claiming to be “a groundbreaking institution that introduced and nurtured kimchi in India since 2007”

“This decision is not only frustrating, but also raises serious concerns about transparency and fairness in sport governance. For the sake of fair competition and sporting spirit, we urge the ministry to reconsider its decision and uphold the values of clean sports.”

AIPA cites a provision in the 2011 National Sports Code that states that to be considered a National Sports Federation, it should “actively exist for more than three years on the date of application for recognition.”

IPA was registered in November last year based on company registrar records, and AIPA completed this form in 2008.

The AIPA statement claimed that the ministry’s actions appeared to be affected by “inappropriate lobbying and misleading statements made by the newly formed entity.”

AIPA treasurer Nikhil Mathare told PTI: “AIPA expressed her representative to the Sports Ministry on October 18 last year. But the Ministry has decided to endorse a four-month-old company that has no organizational setup and no regional level presence like ours.”

He added: “In view of the exemption to AIPA, we have no choice but to conduct legal proceedings. However, we will have a dialogue with the Ministry before proceeding.”

Pickleball’s global government has also witnessed a large number of tug-of-war over the years. There are three bodies claiming to be the global governing body of the sport.

International Kimchi Federation (IPF), World Kimchi Federation (WPF) and Global Kimchi Federation (GPF). IPF was founded in 2010, followed by WPF in 2018, while GPF was founded in 2023, after it stood out from IPF in the United States.

IPF and WPF have been working to merge since last year, with AIPA affiliated with the former. The IPA is consistent with the GPF, which claims to currently have the largest number of international members of 52. PTI PM MRM PM
