Safety category of groundwater resources in Nalgonda: Jal Shakti Ministry

Hyderabad: The Jal Shakti Ministry of MOJS said on Thursday that groundwater in the Nalgonda area generally falls under the safety category.
It said that dynamic groundwater resources for each state and United Territory (UT) are jointly conducted annually by the Central Groundwater Commission (CGWB) and relevant state nodes or relevant groundwater departments.
According to the latest 2024 assessment, the annual groundwater charge in the Nargonda area is 1.21 billion cubic meters (BCM) and the annual groundwater for all purposes is estimated to be 5.72 billion cubic meters (BCM).
The phase of groundwater extraction (SOE) is a measure of annual groundwater extraction for annual extractable groundwater resources, with 52.35% of groundwater extracted throughout the region, indicating that the region generally falls under the “safe” category.
In addition, of the 33 rulers in the region, 25 ruled in total were classified as “safe” and only two were classified as “overdeveloped.”
In addition, CGWB also monitors groundwater levels across the country, including the Nalgonda district four times a year. A close reading of groundwater level data from Nalgonda monitored in November 2024 shows that about 95% of monitored wells are shown in the range of 0-10 MBGL of water levels (low underground), indicating easy access to groundwater.
In addition, to assess the long-term fluctuations in groundwater levels in the Nalgonda area, the water level data collected by CGWB in November 2024 were compared with the interdecadal averages for November (2014-2023).
This analysis of water level data shows that about 65% of groundwater levels in monitored wells increased. This was pointed out by Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary’s Minister of State while answering a question raised by MP Kunduru Raghuveer in Lok Sabha on Thursday.
