Amazon Prime Video users now need to pay for more free viewing, learn more
Amazon Prime Video is one of the most popular OTT platforms on the internet today, and it is more than just audiences around the world. However, membership will now be more expensive for current and new users. Users who wish to watch movies or shows on Amazon must now pay extra. E-commerce platforms have even started sending emails to current users to mention that “main video movies and TV shows will include limited advertising.” The update will begin on June 17, 2025.
Free viewing fee on Amazon
However, the new update is only for those who want free ads, as those who can experience content in ads don’t have to pay more. E-commerce sites have brought ads to everything available on online apps such as movies, TV shows, web series, and more. Therefore, users must watch ads when viewing anything in quality video. The current Prime Video annual subscription plan cost Rs 1,499, which will add Rs 699, is an additional cost or “ad-free tax” that Amazon asks viewers to watch content without ads in Prime Video. The additional monthly fee is Rs 129.
This means that if any current or new user has to pay the base price of the annual subscription plan, the plan is Rs 1,499 and Rs 699 for an experience of watching ad-free content. This will result in the entire membership costing Rs 2,198 per year and Rs 498 per month. Amazon calls it “less meaningful,” but has not yet clarified how many ads will appear when viewing content. “We aim to have fewer ads than TV channels and other streaming services,” Amazon has been sending its users’ emails.
Amazon, on the other hand, clearly states that in an e-commerce delivery application, it will no longer require various other benefits changes, such as same-day delivery, cash back, etc.
Amazon Prime in India
Amazon Prime Video’s global presence is huge because it airs in over 240 countries around the world. Its top market is India, which invests heavily in adding more and more local content. More than 60% of viewers in India viewed content in more than four languages, indicating the diversity of Prime Video’s user base.
