Anand Mahindra sees India as “important opportunity” in Trump’s tariffs. He explained how

Donald Trump’s tariffs have swept the world, with India, China and Vietnam among some of the toughest Asian countries. Although economists have had some influence on larger economies such as China, Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, has an interesting view of India’s opportunities.

Anand Mahindra attended the X on Friday night, reflecting on how Trump’s tariffs raised speculations only around China.

“Today, most speculation about the global impact of U.S. tariffs in the world are around China: what its response might be (China announces strong retaliatory tariffs), and how it actually benefits from the new world order,” he said.

Mahindra acknowledged that in this case, India “is not the main topic of discussion.”

However, he reminded India is expected to become the world’s third largest economy.

“But I believe most people missed the fact that from now on, India will be the third largest economy in the world and the largest democracy in the world. It is also in a relatively good position given its huge domestic consumption and strong indigenous supply chain.”

Anand Mahindra said Trump’s tariffs could bring huge opportunities to India.

He said: “So there is a great opportunity for India to become the main pole of a new multipolar world.

Anand Mahindra further suggested that India must develop a programme on the policies the country should adopt to make the most of this opportunity to become one of the most reliable economies.

“We must develop scenarios where policy should be adopted quickly to capitalize on the situation and become the first and most reliable economic partner of countries around the world,” he said.

Trump’s tariffs in India

Donald Trump announced new import tariffs on Wednesday (local time), outlining the interest rates to be imposed on countries around the world. India will face a 26% tax under the new Trump tariffs.

Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “good friend” and said India charged the U.S. a 52% tax and “we charge almost nothing.”

Trump’s announcement was about the “event that makes the United States rich again.”

“India is very, very difficult. The Prime Minister just left and is my good friend, but you didn’t treat us correctly. They accused us 52% and we barely charge…”
