Anil Kumble hopes the batsman will replace Virat Kohli’s fourth place in Test cricket. Not Kl Rahul, Shubman Gill, or Shreyas Iyer
Legendary Indian spinner and former head coach Anil Kumble suggested a player fill the fourth place in the Indian Test team after Virat Kohli retired.
Star batsman Virat Kohli has finished fourth in Test cricket over the past decade. However, following his recent retirement announcement, team management faces the challenge of identifying the right replacement for the upcoming five-game Test series against England. India is scheduled to travel to the UK in June and the series will begin in Leeds.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are among the leading candidates to fill the key fourth place in the batting order. Additionally, former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble has proposed that Karun Nair may be a strong contender for the position. Kumble is now a respected cricket analyst who believes Nair has the skills needed to perform well at this level.
“I don’t think anyone would think of who would be in 4th place. Rohit didn’t take the first test in Australia, so the order of hitting changed. Once Rahul did a good job, Rohit placed the order and then he stood out from XI in the last test. So you know who is the backup for India, but I don’t think anyone would think that No. 4 wasn’t there.
“Karen should have returned to India in the kind of domestic running style he has. So he might be fourth in India because I feel like you need some experience. You need someone who has been there in England and does that. He has played county cricket. He knows the conditions, so he knows the 30-year-old crlike, but he is still very young to have a chance if he has more. It’s a challenge to have a performance in domestic cricket that is not recognized,” he concluded.
Karun Nair is one of only two Indian cricketers, having achieved three centuries in Test cricket, and has been in a special state while representing Vidarbha in domestic competitions. His outstanding performance in the Bat positioned him for a potential return-to-test aspect nearly eight years later and had the opportunity to travel to England for the upcoming series.
Nair’s last appearance against Australia in Dharamsala in 2017 was that he has not been selected for the national team since his trip to England in 2018. However, he is expected to be included in the Indian A team, which will compete against the England Lions in a four-day two-day match during May-June Window. The series prepares for a five-match test series against England. Outstanding performance in these competitions can pave the way for Karun Nair to return to the international stage.
