Animal Birth Control Monitoring Committee should be formed; NGOs should run with ropes

Authorities have been directed to establish a regional-level animal contraceptive monitoring committee after frequent stray dog attacks reported throughout the state.

The state government has urged local authorities to form an animal birth control measure (ABC) monitoring committee and strictly abide by the rules for disinfecting stray dogs. They were asked to develop a comprehensive plan and ensure adequate infrastructure and equipment are ensured in all ABC centers, human and trained dog handhelders, and in facilities for dog fishing.

The existing center will upgrade infrastructure and other ABC centers will be established throughout the region. Dog shelters should be set up as abandoned houses and or injured dogs, and non-governmental organizations will be kidnapped to operate these shelters.

The action aims to address concerns about stray dog populations and ensure compliance with the sterilization procedures outlined in animal birth control rules. The 20-person National Implementation and Monitoring Committee oversees the operation of the regional committee.

From October 2022 to April 2025, Tiruchi has disinfected nearly 25,000 stray dogs. The city’s estimated number of stray dogs is 43,767. Stray dogs are being sterilized at four animal birth control centers in the city.

Meanwhile, several cases of stray dog attacks have been reported in rural areas, especially in the rural areas of Manapparai. In March, nearly 20 people were bitten by stray dogs and were treated in government hospitals. The threat of dogs is reportedly on the Ramalingam street near Gandhi Nagar and Manapparai bus stands. The town’s ABC Center has been around for more than five years.
