Water released from Miruganda and Shenbagathoppu dams for irrigation

Collector K. Tharpagaraj opened the gates of the Shenbagathoppu Dam in Tiruvannamalai on Saturday.
On Saturday, water from Shenbagathoppu and Miruganda dams in Tiluvunamalai was released.
In the area, there are about 150 Cusecs of water in the Shenbagathoppu dam near Polur for cultivation, Water Resources Department (WRD) officials said. Until May 18, the water from the dam will be released for 15 days.
“Currently, the dam has a water level of 54.28 feet and its total storage capacity is 62.32 feet,” said A. Raja Ganapathy, assistant engineer at WRD.
Collector K. Tharpagaraj, along with WRD officials and Tiruvannamalai MP CN Annadurai, opened the dam's mouth gate, a few kilometers from the downstream reservoir.
Currently, the excess water from the dam passes through four stop dams (including Alliyabhad and Karnakur Check dams), draining the excess water from the dam into 48 tanks – Polur (18), Arani (12), Arcot (9), Cheyyar (8) and Vandavasi (1). This will charge groundwater in and around these villages.
About 120 cusecs of water were released from the Milugada Dam near the town of Karaza Parkum. Currently, water levels will be released until May 9, officials said. The water level of the dam is 20.17 feet and its total capacity is 22.97 feet.
