ASI successfully replicates 11 ancient rock inscriptions found in Gundaram Forest

Karimnagar: In a major breakthrough, the branch of the inscription of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) successfully reproduced 11 ancient rock inscriptions, which dated from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD.

The ASI team led by E. Munirathnam Reddy conducted an inscription investigation on Tuesday deep in the Gundaram Reserve Forest in Peddapalli district.

Investigations conducted with important assistance from the forest department found inscriptions engraved on the huge rock formation near Gattusingaram Village.
These findings, believed to be related to the Sātavāhana dynasty and were engraved in early Brahman scripts, provide potential insight into the socio-political and religious landscapes of the early history of deccan. Some of the inscriptions recorded include “Sidham haritiputasa kumasa akusirimitasa īdhagamitam”, “Kumarasa sakasiri putasa”, “… putasa kumasa akumasa akusiri mitasa mitasa i vakamira i vakamira”

Munirathnam Reddy expressed enthusiasm for the discoveries in his speech at Deccan Chronicle, noting that “it is one of the rare cases of discovering such ancient inscriptions in the reserve forest. The challenging terrain only emphasizes the importance of the work.”

He added that the inscriptions could shed light on early settlement patterns, regional governance and religious practices of the time. The ASI plans to work with local authorities on further documentation, preservation and potential protection efforts.
