Assam police catch rare lizard
Therefore, the STF team established a trap in the Mohanbari area with the help of the police in the Dibrugarh area and was closely operated and intelligence supported by the South Asian Wildlife Justice Commission. The team found three suspected smugglers in Sun Feast Dhaba, Mohanbari Tiniali. Two of them were on white cars and one on a motorcycle. During the interrogation, they published their names as Debashis Dohutia (34), Manash Dohutia (28) and Dipankar Gharphalia (40).
During the search, the STF team found the phone and file in the handsets and files owned by three arrested people, and later seized the phone and files. “They revealed that they have collected and brought Tokay Gecko lizards from Arunachal Pradesh and finally settled a deal to sell every Tokay Gecko for Rs 10,000,” said the CPRO of Assam Police Department.
“The species is protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 1972, which is the highest protection. The maximum penalty is 7 years RI, a identifiable and non-bailable offence. Export is prohibited altogether. The species is found only in a few pockets in Arunachal Pradesh, India and in a few pockets in Assam and Assam, India.”
