Media reports said the National Central Bureau of the Bangladesh Police (NCB) has made a request to Interpol to make a red notice for 12 people, including the deported Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina, 77, has lived in India since August 5 last year when she fled Bangladesh, a massive student-led protest that led her Awami League (AL) 16-year regime to overthrow Bangladesh.

The Daily Star said the NCB handled such requests based on appeals from courts, prosecutors or investigative agencies, citing the words of the Assistant Inspector General (Media).

“These applications were filed during the investigation or during the ongoing case litigation,” Sager said at the police headquarters.

INTERPOL uses red notices to help locate and temporarily arrest individuals in the hope of extradition or similar legal proceedings. The newspaper said Interpol helped track the whereabouts of fugitives living abroad and confirmed that the information would be shared with relevant authorities.

After Muhammad Yunus took over as chief adviser to the interim government on August 8, Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT) issued a warrant for Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, advisers, as well as military and civilian officials.

In November, the ICT’s chief prosecutor’s office formally asked the police headquarters to seek help from Interpol in the arrest of Hasina and other identified as fugitives.

On January 21, Bangladesh’s interim government said it would continue its efforts to bring the ousted Hasina back from India and seek international intervention if necessary.
