BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia responds to Virat Kohli’s statement on family policy

BCCI responded to Virat Kohli’s complaints about the strict policies of family members accompanying participants. India has formulated the policy earlier this year after the failure of the Australian border-Gawasca trophy.
There has been a lot of speculation about the standard operating procedures (SOP) of players following Virat Kohli’s concerns over the latest instructions from the BCCI, and the buzz about possible changes in rules for family members and players traveling overseas.
In response to these comments and ongoing discussions, BCCI made it clear that no changes would be made. Devajit Saikia, secretary of the Indian Cricket Governing Body, said the existing policy will remain as it is. He pointed out that this policy has been around for a long time and is nothing new.
“At this stage, the current policy will remain intact because it is crucial for the country and our institution, the BCCI.” The policy has not been formulated overnight; it has been around for decades, dating back to the game era of our President Roger Binny, and even earlier.
“The new policy is an amendment to the previous one, which contains other provisions on players in practical meetings, game schedules, travel, luggage, team sports and other auxiliary activities, all aimed at targeting team cohesion and solidarity,” Saikia told Cricbuzz.
The BCCI secretary said that players who require permission in special circumstances may grant exceptions.
Saikia added: “BCCI has increased the duration of family members living with players during overseas travel and provides provisions for relaxing norms in special circumstances, but this will be done through appropriate processes.”
A recent comment from top BCCI officials was in response to Virat Kohli’s recent statement on the importance of providing family support to players. Kohli expressed disappointment with others’ lack of understanding on this issue.
“I hope to be normal. Then, you can really treat your game as a responsibility. You complete this responsibility and you live again. Like, different things can happen in your life. This makes you absolutely normal.
It’s not a vague meaning, it’s a very real way to fulfill the promise, responsibility, and then you come home and be with your family, and you definitely have a normal life in your home, and normal family life goes on. So, for me, it was absolutely a huge joy. And, I don’t miss any chance to go out and spend time with my family,” said Kohli on RCB Innovation Labs India Summit.
If you’re not in the loop, BCCI has put in some tough rules for Indian players after a less-than-great tour in Australia. They introduced a new policy to limit family access to travel for just two weeks, for more than 45 days.
