Before and after: Isro’s Cartosat-3 captures earthquake damage in Myanmar | World News

Bengaluru: ISRO released images captured by its Earth imaging and mapping satellite, CartoSat-3, showing the damage caused by the March 28 earthquake in Myanmar. On March 29, ISRO acquired the Secretary Cartosat-3 Imagery in Myanmar City.

Additionally, CartoSat-3 data covering the same area before incidents were referred for change analysis and damage assessment, the space agency said. CartoSat-3 is a third-generation agile late-stage satellite with high resolution imaging capabilities.

Major damage to the city of Mandalay infrastructure, such as Sky Villa, Phayani Pagoda, Mahamuni Pagoda and Ananda Pagoda, Mandalay University of Mandial or partial damage, was observed.

As can be seen from the image, ISRO believes that the earthquake caused the complete collapse of the historic Ava (Innwa) bridge on the Inrawaddy River in Siva City. Fractures, flood leveling of the Ilawadi River and related liquefaction were also observed.

In the statement, the Space Agency pointed out that the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that occurred on March 28 hit Myanmar, followed by a strong aftershock of 6.4. The epicenter is located at 22.013°N 95.922°E, with a depth of 10 kilometers near the Sagaing-Mandalay boundary.

It further said that the center of the earthquake was located near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city, which suffered severe damage. The earthquake also rocked the capital Naypyidaw and other areas, causing the collapse of infrastructure, roads and residential buildings.

It added: “The shock was felt not only in Myanmar, but also in neighboring countries. The shock wave was strong enough to shock residents and northern Thailand, where residents reported losses.”
