J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah distanced himself from party lawmakers’ recent postponement motion for the WAQF Act within the J&K General Assembly on Tuesday (April 15, 2025). However, Mr. Abdullah’s statement elicited a sharp reaction from several opposition parties.
“It is usually an adjournment motion for matters that work in governments. However, the WAQF Act was enacted in parliament by the Indian government and therefore this act should be proposed through another procedural route. The speaker may allow discussion of the WAQF Act, but unfortunately, unfortunately, our members have passed it as Abdull Mr. Abdull file for It for It File It File It File It for It ob Mr.’Abdull Mr.”
Several MLAs at the Ruling National Conference (NC), led by MLA Tanvir Sadiq, presented a motion to adjourn the bill before the debate on the bill. However, the speaker Rahim does not allow any discussion on this Sub-judicial.
The NC MLA has also joined with the opposition MLA, including the People’s Democratic Party Members (PDP) and the J&K People’s Congress (JKPC), seeking discussions on the bill and adhering to a common resolution. The commotion of issues between the NC MLA and the BJP MLA stalled the proceedings of the J&K Congress for about three days.
JKPC asked the Chief Minister to apologize and urged the Speaker to arrange an urgent one-day meeting to “correctly resolve the WAQF bill issue.”
“Mr. Abdullah acknowledged procedural errors in the J&K Parliament’s handling of the WAQF bill. Those who shouted for three days and those who did not allow any business to trade need to answer why they acted in the way they acted? Who ordered 50 legislators to shout for three days in a group?” said Mr. Lonely.
He also questioned the experience of senior NC members. “I don’t believe in J&K’s oldest party, with the most experienced MLA, and don’t know what they’re doing. This is my second semester. If I knew and tweeted that day, why didn’t your experienced MLAS know that day? You have to have a dozen lawyers out of 50 legislators who yell like an excited kindergarten, you’ll yell like you, you’ll be on Desks Desks dun dun dun dun dun dun, he added.
Mr Lorne accused the government of “planning the entire plot to avoid condemning the resolution of the WAQF Act”. “This is your script. The entire song and dance performance are carefully planned by you. You don’t want the resolution of the J&K rally. You are accomplice of this crime against Indian Muslims,” added Mr Lone.
PDP head Iltija Mufti also targeted the NC with the aim of failing to pass a joint resolution at the rally. “During the General Assembly meeting held in Jamu, no resolution was proposed against the WAQF bill. Seeing Mr. Abdullah walk with Rigiju, the Minister of Union in Tulip Garden. Have you maintained a silent understanding of the BJP on the WAQF issue?” Ms. Muti said.
Mr. Mufti, who is also the daughter of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, said North Carolina “failed to support the Muslim interests in J&K.”
“The people at J&K are disappointed. You are regulating Article 370 and repealing. [Omar Abdullah] It’s a CM in most Muslim countries, but you said nothing [on Waqf Act]. BJP and NC have an implicit understanding. ” she added.
