Beware of fake military donation requests: TGCSB

Hyderabad: As philanthropists and various organizations provide financial support to the Indian army during the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, magic has begun to exploit this situation by targeting innocent individuals. The criminals are sending suspicious contacts seeking donations to the military, posing a serious cyber threat.
Shikha Goel, director of Telangana Cybersecurity Bureau (TGCSB), issued a warning to the public to warn the dangers of fake virus information falling on WhatsApp, which incorrectly claimed that the Indian Army collected funds.
“These deceptive information preys on patriotism, claiming that the funds will directly support soldiers. They provide fake bank account details and use emotional manipulation strategies to mislead the public,” Gail said. “The information is often claimed by the government to approve without verification, urging people to donate to specific accounts. The reverser pressurizes the receiver to act quickly and widely, further expanding the scam.”
Similarly, Hyderabad cybercrime police have issued alerts about false and misleading information targeting the public. ACP Siva Maruthi of the city’s Cyber Crime Unit (CCCU) noted that complex strategies such as phishing emails, fake login pages and malicious attachments were used to obtain unauthorized access to sensitive information. “These criminals are taking advantage of the current geopolitical situation to exploit citizens. We have issued consultations to all government departments to prevent these threats,” Marcy said.
CCCU DCP DCP Dara Kavitha further warned the public about the growing threat of malicious content related to WhatsApp, email and India-Parker conflict. “Cybercriminals are using fake news, malware, spyware and phishing links to disguise themselves as conflict-related updates or exclusive videos,” she explained.
“These links may appear as images or videos, often sent from unknown numbers or shared in WhatsApp, Telegram, or other social media groups. They can put personal and financial information at risk by placing malware or directing users to phishing sites.”
