Sky layoffs: Comcast-owned British media group will lay off nearly 2,000 jobs in 2025.

The UK-based Sky Broadcasting Group said on Thursday that 2,000 jobs in the UK, accounting for 7 per cent of its workforce, could be at risk as the company shakes up its customer service.

A spokesperson for the U.S.-owned broadcaster told AFP: “We are transforming our business to provide faster, simpler, more digital customer service.”

The spokesman said it was about building a “future ready sky”, adding that customers would like to contact the company 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Three of the 10 contact centres in northern England are believed to be closing, putting 2,000 characters in danger.

The company said that while clients want to be able to speak directly with consultants, they also want flexibility in paying bills or managing contracts digitally.

Sky said its transformation will involve investing millions of pounds in the new state-of-the-art campus in Livingston, Scotland.

Sky, formerly owned by Media Baron Rupert Murdoch, has been run by US cable giant Comcast since 2018.

In addition to the proposal to close Stockport, Sheffield and Leeds Central Contact Center, operations of Dunfermlyn and Newcastle will also be affected.
