In March 2025, the total revenue of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Company (BMTC) was Rs 8.339 crore and Rs 3.55 crore came from the unified payment interface (UPI), thus accounting for a record 39.8% of total ticket revenue in one month.

Since January 2025, BMTC has actively promoted cashless payment systems by implementing static UPI QR codes in 75% of its fleet. Many posters with codes are trapped on the side of the bus for passengers to scan and pay.

UPI revenue was Rs 19.66 crore in January, but revenue rose by nearly Rs 100 crore in February, with UPI ticket revenue of Rs 2.936 crore (35.21% of total ticket revenue of Rs 8.339 crore).

On February 8, BMTC achieved a major milestone (UPI) in Digital Payment in Day (UPI). The trend then continued, with the average daily digital fare collections between February and Rs 100 crore and Rs 114 crore in March.

“BMTC actively promotes UPI payments to enhance passenger convenience and streamline operations. The program has led to a steady growth in digital transactions, which strengthens the company’s commitment to modernizing public transportation services,” BMTC said in a press release released on Tuesday.

It is worth noting that fares have risen, with the lowest fares increased from Rs 5 to Rs 6, and the highest fares for non-air-conditioned buses are above Rs 32, which also provides contributions to more conductors and passengers to use UPI as payment method to avoid the change crisis.

“The widespread adoption of UPI payments has greatly improved the ease and speed of ticketing transactions, benefiting both passengers and BMTC employees. This achievement marks a crucial step to encouraging digital payments for commuters and paving the way for cashless and more efficient ticketing systems.”
