Police said on Thursday (March 27, 2025) that unidentified wrongdoing dropped bombs and opened fire outside the residence of BJP leader and former MP Arjun Singh.
They said a young man was injured in an attack that broke out on Wednesday (March 26, 2025).
Mr Singh and his close associates reportedly hunted down the attackers, forcing them to flee the scene.
“The situation is under control now. Those involved will spare no effort … will take legal action against the culprit,” said Ajay Thakur, chief of police in Balacpoll.
Mr Singh claimed that Namit Singh, son of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sunita Singh, was behind the attack.
“He fired in front of police. There was dangerous shooting and bombing,” the former MP claimed.
According to police sources, violence broke out after a dispute broke out between two groups of workers in Meghna Jute Mill in the area.
Meanwhile, TMC’s Jagaddal MLA Somnath Shyam accused Singh and his supporters of inciting violence.
“Arjun Singh and his men attacked Meghna Jute Mill and fired bullets. The young man was shot by Singh and injured three to four more people in the attack by his team. We demand that Singh be arrested immediately or we will launch a bigger protest.”
Namit Singh reportedly arrived at the scene after receiving a report of the unrest.
Police said shortly afterwards, the situation escalated, resulting in shootings and bombings.
Mr Singh said in describing the sequence of the incidents: “About 10:30 pm, I suddenly heard two rounds of gunfire. I was in Majdoor Bhavan with my close colleague. I rushed outside and headed toward Meghna Mor. Once we arrived at the site, the Miscreants opened fire at us.” Mr Singh claimed that he had been fired for at least five to seven rounds.
After the attack, he and his colleagues chased the attackers, one of whom was trapped in drainage and injured.
Large police contingents, including Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, were deployed in the region to control the situation.
Officials said several empty cartridges and live bombs had been found from the scene.
The injured youth was initially taken to Badpara State General Hospital. Police said he was transferred to a hospital in Kolkata as his condition worsened.
Officials added that the patrol had stepped up in Bhatpara to prevent further escalation.
