There was an Indian wedding that almost doubled and we weren’t talking about Ambani here.
Wedding is one of the most important events of a lifetime, and people often spend a lot of time on weddings, from arranging grand venues to designer clothing, exotic food to luxury goods. But have you ever wondered which one is the most expensive wedding ever? Most people think it is a royal celebration of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which is reportedly sold for about £32 million or more than Rs 3 billion. But no, there is an Indian wedding that costs almost twice as much, and we are not talking about Ambani here.
On November 6, 2016, Brahmani Reddy, daughter of former Karnataka minister Janardhan Reddy, married Rajeev Reddy, son of Hyderabad businessman Vikram Dev Reddy. The five-day celebration was reportedly priced at over Rs 5 billion and welcomed over 50,000 guests. This is one of the most luxurious weddings in India ever.
To accommodate a huge crowd, 1,500 hotel rooms were booked in Bangalore and Hyderabad. About 2,000 taxis were arranged to transport guests and 15 helicopters were provided for VIP. The venue for the palace grounds in Bangalore was transformed by the top Bollywood Art Director to be like the Royal Empire.
The bride’s outfit made headlines nationwide. Brahmani wore Kanjeevaram saris in real gold thread designed by Neeta Lulla, worth Rs 1.7 crore. She finished the look with diamonds worth about Rs 150 crore and gold jewelry, including diamonds worth Rs 25 crore.
Fifty makeup artists flew from Mumbai to the bride and her close family. The makeup bill alone reportedly spanned Rs 3 million. Even wedding invitations are unique as it includes an LCD screen that plays videos.
When Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding involved a massive spending on security arrangements like snipers, drones and special police teams, Reddy’s wedding stood out with its unparalleled luxury and scale. Although Anant Ambani’s wedding is now considered more expensive, the 2016 celebrations remain a lasting symbol of Indian luxury.
