Cabinet approved Shillong-Sinchar expressway project with an estimated cost of Rs 22,864 crore

The Alliance Cabinet approved the development of the 166.80 km Greenfield Expressway Corridor from Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya on Wednesday (30 April 2025) to develop in Assam under a hybrid annuity model with a total cost of Rs 22,864 crore.
According to the official statement, the project is 166.80 km (NH-6), located in Meghalaya (144.80 km) and Assam (22 km).
“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal for the development, maintenance and management of four-lane greenfield access-controlled 166.80 km of National Highway No 06 from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam on hybrid annuity mode…at a total capital cost of Rs 22,864,” it added.
It noted that the proposed Greenfield Expressway Corridor would increase traffic levels between Guwahati and Silchar.
“The development of the corridor will improve connectivity with Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Barak Valley areas from the mainland and Guwahati, and greatly reduce travel distance and travel time,” it said.
The corridor will improve connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya and stimulate economic development, including industry development in Meghalaya as it passes through the cement and coal production areas in Meghalaya.
According to the statement, the corridor will cater to national and international visitors from well-connected Guwahati Airports, Shillong Airport and Sel Charlie Airport (via the existing NH-06), connecting Guwahati to Silchar. This will connect scenic spots in the Northeast and promote tourism.
