The ARS project is underway

Steel cutting of the Acoustic Research Ship (ARS) built for the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) was conducted on Wednesday at Garden Reach Reach Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata.
ARS’s contract was signed between GRSE and DRDO/Naval Physics and Oceanography Laboratory (NPOL) on October 21, 2024. The ship is expected to be delivered within three years in 2027.
Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defense Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, is the chief guest. Grse Chairman and Managing Director Pr Hari, Chandrika Kaushik DG (PC&SI), Drdo, D. Seshagiri, a senior scientist at NPOL, DRDO, a senior scientist at GRSE, a senior scientist from Grse.
Once completed, the ARS will be India’s first silent class ship. It will be 90 meters long and have a displacement of more than 5,000 tons. It is designed to achieve a speed of 12 knots. This state-of-the-art vessel will be equipped with modern facilities including cable cars, lunar pools and Dropkeel for NPOL’s underwater acoustic and oceanographic research activities. The container is equipped with a dynamic positioning system (DP-II).
