The official statement said on Thursday (April 3, 2025) that the Commerce Department is carefully studying the impact of the U.S. reciprocity tariffs on India. The statement added that the department interacted with all stakeholders, including domestic industries and exporters, to seek feedback on the issue.

The Department of Commerce said it is also looking at the opportunities that may arouse due to this new development in U.S. trade policy.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that additional AD-VALOREM duties have been imposed from imports from all trading partners, ranging from 10% to 50%.

From April 5, 10% of baseline responsibilities will take effect from April 9. Certain departments are exempt from these responsibilities, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and energy products.

“The Department of Commerce is carefully studying the implications of various measures/announcements proposed by the U.S. President.”

It also said that discussions are underway between India and the U.S. trade teams to end a mutually beneficial multisectoral bilateral trade agreement (BTA).

The focus of the negotiations is to enable both countries to develop trade, investment and technology transfer.

“We are in touch with the Trump administration on these issues and are looking forward to pushing them in the coming days,” it said.
