CBI director Praveen Sood receives one year extension

The Centre extended the term of CBI director Praveen Sood for one year on Wednesday (May 7, 2025).

Mr. Sood took over as Director of CBI on May 25, 2023 for a term of two years.

The decision to extend the term was at the meeting of the election committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, composed of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and opposition leaders, and was in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday, May 5, 2025 (May 5, 2025).

The Cabinet Appointment Committee (ACC) approved Mr. Sood's extension for one year, over May 24, according to the recommendations of the Selection Committee.

Mr Sood was an Indian Police (IPS) official in 1986 for Karnataka cadre. When he was appointed as director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), he was then the Director General of Karnataka Police (DGP).

Mr. Sood was born in Kangra district of Himaal Pradesh in 1964 and joined IPS in 1964 at the age of 22 and completed civil engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

He also holds a postgraduate degree from the Indian School of Management in Bangalore and Maxwell’s School of Governance at Syracuse University in New York.

Mr. Sood, known for his hands-on attitude, has overseen the investigation of highly anticipated cases involving high-net-worth individuals as well as matters with interstate and international influence.

Tech-savvy officials work to strengthen CCTN (crime and crime tracking networks and systems) and ICJS (interoperable criminal justice system) and the judiciary in Karnataka.
