CBI Director Praveen Sood's tenure is extended by one year

The central government on Wednesday extended the term of CBI director Praveen Sood by one year without a consensus on appointing a new chief. Karnataka cadre officials of the 1986 batch of Indian Police (IPS) officials were scheduled to complete his two-year term on May 24.

However, after the consideration of the Vigorous Selection Committee, the decision on his successor could not be determined.
A government statement said: “According to the recommendations of the committee, the Cabinet Appointment Committee has approved the extension of the IPS (KN: 1986) term as director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), for more than one year of 24.05.2025.”

The choice of the CBI director is managed by a committee of three members chaired by the Prime Minister, including the opposition leader of Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India (CJI). Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and CJI Sanjiv Khanna to finalize the next appointment. However, the meeting was reportedly concluded without any consensus.

Born in 1964, Praveen Sood is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). He joined the Indian Police Department in 1986 and served as assistant police chief in Mysore in 1989. Later, he served as police chief for Bellary and Raichur and served as deputy chief of police (law and order) in the city of Bengaluru.
In 1999, Sood was appointed police advisor to the Mauritius government, where he held three years of office. During this foreign mission, he received valuable risks from the policing systems in Europe and North America. After returning to India, he took a leave of absence in 2003 to study for postgraduate studies in Public Policy and Management at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Bangalore, India and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in New York.
Sood has held several key positions in Karnataka and at the national level, and his tenure as a CBI director has been marked by several high-profile investigations and institutional reforms.
