In a major leadership melee, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson announced on Tuesday (22 April 2025) that he decided to resign as chairman of the Tata Group’s low-cost carrier Air India Express Committee.
He will be replaced by Nipun Aggarwal, son of Tata and chief commercial officer of Air India, who is already a member of the Air India Express Commission.
Mr. Wilson shared the news for airline employees through an internal platform. These announcements ended the merger of various airlines under the Tata Fold in the context of Air India – the merger of Vistara with Air India and Air India India with Air India. This sets the stage for the next phase to further synchronize the route between the two airlines, which was the stage where Mr. Aggarwal served as chief commercial officer at Air India.
“As this structural work is largely done, the focus is now shifted to fully leveraging and optimizing the group’s fleet, networking, sales, distribution and loyalty assets,” Mr Wilson said in his message. Air India will focus on domestic routes and international connections from metro to metal, but low-cost airline Air India Express will target the targets of Level 1 and Level 2 cities with short-distance international destinations.
