Chemical smoke near New Zealand parliament triggers emergency response

Emergency services responded to a chemical incident near New Zealand Parliament on April 22, 2025. Smoke was found from the former Department of Education in Wellington. The incident occurred on Bowen Street, prompting half of the streets to close and the deployment of multiple fire trucks, including Hazmat units.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported that the situation involved a reaction between two dangerous epoxidants. Smoke was observed at the building around 1:25 pm New Zealand time, prompting authorities to take immediate action. Police assisted in traffic management at key intersections, including Bowen and Tinacori, Bowen and Terrace, as well as Bowen and Sydney Street.

“Police has closed half of Bowen Street in Wellington, where several fire trucks and a hazardous goods control device are located,” one witness said.
However, after firefighters arrived at the site, the reaction between the chemicals stopped and the building was evacuated and ventilated.

At about 3pm, there were about 10 fire and emergency New Zealand vehicles, including specialized units equipped with hazardous substances.

There were no reports of injuries and it is not clear whether any buildings were evacuated during the incident. Authorities are still finding out the cause of the fire. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information is provided.
