China Planning Hospital on the banks of the Teesta River, Bangladesh

New Delhi: China is planning to build a hospital on the banks of the Teesta River in northern Bangladesh and is conducting a preliminary investigation of the project, a development that shows a significant increase in ties between the two countries.

According to people familiar with the matter, a Chinese team recently inspected a total of 20 acres of land in Char Kalagachi, north of Bangladesh to build the hospital. They said the purpose of ground inspections is to determine the most appropriate location for hospital construction.

Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim regime in Bangladesh, followed closely, seeking assistance for the Teesta River Basin Management project on his recent journey to China.
China conducted an earlier survey to assess the scope of the proposed integrated management and restoration project of Teesta River. In 2016, Bangladesh signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with state-owned China Electric Power Company to explore an alternative way to manage river challenges. The Memorandum of Understanding leads to the overall plan for 2020, which will be completed in 2024 under the five-year plan.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh decided to send 31 citizens injured to Pakistan in the July 2024 “uprising” ahead of Pakistan’s foreign minister’s visit to Dhaka next week.

Nurjahan Begum, a health consultant for the interim regime, announced this at a press conference organized by the Dhaka Foreign Service Academy on Sunday afternoon. The press conference was mainly intended to inform the Provisional Government of the work done.
