China’s Xi Jinping urges greater cooperation with Vietnam as trade tensions

Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Chinese President Xi Jinping called for stronger industrial and supply chain cooperation with Vietnam and broader cooperation in emerging areas.

Xi Jinping started his trip to Southeast Asia this week, starting from April 14 to 15 to his state visit with Vietnam.

The purpose of this trip is to consolidate economic ties with China’s closest neighbors when the world’s first two economies are locked on tariffs.
China imposed imports of its U.S. goods to 125% on Friday, hitting President Donald Trump’s decision to include the world’s second-ranked economy in higher responsibilities.

The Ministry quoted an article published by the Chinese Leader in Vietnamese media as an article urging a urge to strengthen coordination and cooperation through regional initiatives such as East Asian cooperation and Lancang-Mekong cooperation.

He called this effort “injecting more stability and positive energy into a world of chaos and intertwining.” “There is no winner in the trade war and tariff war, and there is no way out for trade protectionism.” He said: “We must firmly protect the multilateral trading system, maintain the stability of global industry and supply chains, and maintain an international open cooperation environment.”

Last week, China tried to lead the U.S. negotiators to hold video calls with the EU and Malaysia, which hosted ASEAN this year, as well as Saudi Arabia and South Africa, through engagement with Gulf countries and groups of 20 and prominent countries.

To avoid punishing U.S. tariffs, Vietnam is ready to use its territory to crack down on Chinese goods shipped to the United States and will tighten controls on China’s sensitive exports, saying it is a person and government document familiar with the matter.

Xi Jinping said in the article that China welcomes importing more high-quality imports from Vietnam and encourages more Chinese companies to invest and start businesses in Southeast Asian countries.

The article said that the two countries should expand cooperation in emerging fields such as 5G, artificial intelligence and green development.
