The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is directed by the Union Ministry of Interior (MHA) and takes over the security of the Lengpui Airport in Mizoram, about 32 km from the state capital Aizawl. This will be the first CISF stationed in the state, as well as the 69th civilian airport under its protection.
About 121 CISF personnel deployed a four-day transition period with the Mizoram Police Department, after which the overall security of the airport will be managed by the CISF starting April 24, including “access control” and “external cordons”.
Manpower will also increase in the next few days to improve safety.
“Lengpui is located near the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh and is crucial to India’s ACT East policy, which aims to improve connectivity and economic ties with Southeast Asia. This milestone increases connectivity and strengthens India’s commitment to secure its Northeast aviation infrastructure,” CISF said in a statement.
Sources from MHA said the security reassessment of Lengpui Airport has been underway and has occurred in internal conflicts between Myanmar and Bangladesh.
In March, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma had said the state was secretly used as a transit route by foreigners traveling to Myanmar to provide military training there. Mr Lalduhoma said a discussion was held with the MHA to transfer the state-built airport in 1998 to the Airport Authority of India.
