Representatives of nearly 50 civil society organizations in Maharashtra sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (May 17, 2025) while maintaining peace.

“The joint position of all citizens, organizations and political parties in Jamu and Kashmir against terrorism proves that the state represents nonviolence and peace, not hatred or violence.” The memorandum endorsed by several activists, including Medha Patkar and Anand Patwardhan.

While explicitly condemning the terrorist attacks, the group also questioned the government’s response and sought action. The representative of the organization asked a special parliamentary meeting to discuss ways to combat terrorism and develop effective defense strategies, as well as a special judicial committee to investigate violence in Pahargam.

“As a democracy, our defense strategy must go beyond partisan politics and prioritize national unity. A whole-party dialogue was held, and you [the PM’s] Absent makes these efforts incomplete. A special parliamentary meeting should be convened to resolve this gap. …The high-level judicial investigation into the Pahalgam Holocaust is crucial and the perpetrators must be punished. We condemn post-event violence against specific communities and demand action against the culprit. “Inciting hatred through media/social media has fueled distrust and communism and must be curbed immediately,” the statement said.

Reports on Pahalgam and its security will be released later this month, with activists discussing their plans to request nationwide support to support peace between India and Pakistan.

“On May 22, it will be a month since Pahalgam killed 27 tourists. That day, we will also release our first report for our team investigating various aspects related to the Pahalgam terrorist attack.”
