Missing since March 29, the bodies of Hungarian tourists were found in Meghalaya

Guwahati

The body of a Hungarian tourist disappeared after checking into a hotel in Shillong on March 29 and was found on April 10 on a steep slope in the eastern Kashi Mountains of Meghalaya.

The district’s police chief Vivek Syiem said a forensic team arrived at the scene and conducted a live autopsy on the body of Puskas Zsolt near Ramdait, a village in the Sohra Subladesh Shella area, bordering Bangladesh.

The village is a popular destination for hikers who cover several trails in the spacious forests of the nearby Shell-Suhra region.

Mr Syiem said on Friday (11 April 2025): “Because the village is very quiet, locals are used to attacking several hikes regularly.

“No one, not even the villagers, has not taken this path. He may have slipped and fell and died of hunger, but the autopsy report will confirm everything.”

Mr Syiem said: “We are in touch with the Hungarian Embassy. After the magistrate investigates and registers for an unnatural death case, we will hand over the body to the family. Otherwise, we will send it to the last ceremony in Meghalaya.”

Drone helps search operation team find body

The district police said Mr. Zsolt was last on March 29 at some children in Mowokaville and Ramdat villages, when he boarded a hotel in the Laitumkhrah area of Heron that day. He walked alone to the hiking trail with his backpack on his back.

“He inspected the hotel around 9 a.m. and hired a taxi to put him near Sula around noon. We met after the Hungarian embassy filed a missing complaint on April 2,” said an official from the Lutmkra police station.

The police then started a search operation through several teams, including Sohra and personnel from adjacent police stations, the National Disaster Response Force and local volunteers. Staff from the UAV Control Center were also involved.

“The drone helped narrow the search. In the past three days, one of the six teams searching for the hiking area has found the body.”
