Comedians requested a week to appear after the Mumbai police issued a notice

Sources said that while officials did not disclose when Kunal Kamra, who was accused of making defamatory remarks against Shinde, were called, the source said the comic had sought a week before the police.

Officials said on Tuesday that Mumbai police have issued a notice of upright comedian Kunal Kamra related to alleged derogatory remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. One official said Kamra was asked to be related to the case against him registered.

“We have sent preliminary notice to Kamla as an investigation into him has begun,” the official said without providing further details.

Sources said that while officials did not disclose when defamatory remarks against Shinde were summoned, the source said the comic had sought a week before police.

The 36-year-old stand-up comedian swept a major political storm in Maharashtra as he took a place in the political career of Shiv Sena leader Shinde in the show.

Kamra performed a parody of popular Hindi songs from the 1997 film Dil Toh Pagal Hai, apparently referring to Shinde as “Gaddar” (Traitor). He also jokes about recent political developments in Maharashtra, including the divisions of Shiv Sena (2022) and NCP (2023).

On Sunday evening, members of Shiv Sena damaged the habitat comedy club at the performance of Kamra in Mumbai and the hotel where the venue is located.

According to a complaint by Shiv Sena Mla Murji Patel, Khar police conducted FIR registration on Kamra for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Shinde.

Police also conducted cases against 40 workers of Shiv Sena, led by Shinder, to destroy the venue of the comedian’s show. On Monday, police arrested Shiv Sena staff member Rahul Kanal and 11 others to loot the display site. The local court granted them bail on the same day.
