“Conference on India-Pakistan tensions”: UNSC President | World News

UN Security Council President Evangelos Sekeris said the council was seriously concerned about tensions between India and Pakistan and could meet on this situation.
“With plain logic, this may be something that may happen,” he said on Thursday when asked whether he would be in the tense situation in South Asia.
Sekeris, the United Nations Permanent Representative for Greece, spoke at a press conference after serving as chairman of the rotation committee this month.
In principle, India would oppose the Council meeting on the issue, as it believes that the dispute with Pakistan was a bilateral matter between the leaders of the SIMLA in 1972 and that there should be no third party involvement.
However, under the United Nations Carter, the Council authorized to hold a meeting on this issue.
But beyond that, in reality, the Council will not be able to take any action, as permanent members (probably China) do not want to directly participate in respect for India.
Secres noted that Pakistan was on the Council as an elected member.
He admitted: “It's a difficult subject, but we are very accepting of any request (to meet). If meetings will be held with the Security Council in any form, we will still (to hold) debate, as the President, you know, in a way that is loyal to the mandate.”
It could also be an “opportunity to express opinions, which may help spread tensions,” he added.
“We are also seriously concerned about the growing bilateral tension,” Secres said.
“If the situation has not been downgraded and an extraordinary Security Council meeting is called for, then this could happen,” he said.
He said the Council, like Greece, strongly condemned the “outrageous” terrorist attacks on Pahargam last month.
He added: “We condemn terrorism in all its forms, everywhere.”
Asked if he mentioned the resistance front because “Pakistan used its leverage as a member” whether the council’s statement did not mention the perpetrator, a clothing related to the Rashka-ee-to-toiba-connected clothing that the company is responsible for the attack and whether it will work as hard as such, such as global global efforts to be responsible for specific terrorist organizations.
“Any text press statement is adopted by consensus, and of course, you can't comment at all stages of the negotiation because of the internal documentation,” Secris said.
He added: “One of the important things we have for me is the issuance of this press statement because, as you said, one member of the Security Council is certainly part of this conflict, then you can expect another outcome.”
