Meet 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre, who received trial from Chennai Super Kings IPL 2025

In the IPL 2025 season, CSK won only one of three games. They hope to improve their performance by giving Mhatre opportunities in training camp.
Chennai Super Kings have reportedly invited Mumbai batsman Ayush Mhatre to test at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium during the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The 17-year-old won his first class and listed cricket in late 2024, and he has drawn opinions throughout the domestic season with his impressive performance.
CSK started the IPL 2025 season a bit hard and managed to win one of the three games they have played so far. To strengthen their team, they decided to give Mhatre a chance to shine in training camp.
According to the Indian era, Mhatre was invited to join the CSK camp in Chennai for the mid-season trial. Even if he wasn’t sold at the IPL 2025 Mega auction in November 2024, he still has the potential to join the team if the player becomes unavailable or faces injury setbacks.
CSK MD Kasi Viswanathan told the Indian Times: “Yes, we have called him for a trial. He impressed our talent scouts. No, if there is any need, we won’t choose anyone, it’s just a trial.”
Who is Ayush Mhatre?
17-year-old right-handed batsman Ayush Mhatre started his domestic cricket career in the Iranian trophy last October. He opened the inning with Prithvi Shaw and impressed by scoring 19 runs. Mhatre has the opportunity to share the field with prominent players such as Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur and Sarfaraz Khan for the current KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane.
In a great sportsmanship performance, Mhatre generously gave Rohit Sharma when the Indian captain joined the Ranji Trophy match in Mumbai against Jamu & Kashmir. This thoughtful gesture emphasizes Mhatre’s maturity and respect for senior players on the team, demonstrating his team spirit.
Mhatre’s Achievements
He set the youngest batsman, with a record of 150 runs in cricket, and an impressive 181 goals when he was only 17 years and 291 days old.
Mhatre impressed with Baroda’s 71 goals through fifty in Ranji Trophy’s debut. He didn’t stop there. He went on to play a stunning century on the Chennai Super Kings’ own Ruturaj Gaikwad team, earning 176 runs from a 232-goal squad against Maharashtra.
During the 2024/25 Asian Cup under 19, Mhatre did show his skills, becoming the second highest run score for the Indian U19 team, with a total of 176 times.
But Mhatre is more than just a talented batsman. He also became a bowler’s mark, scoring seven wickets in cricket, including the precious wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Sunrisers Hyderabad who played for India.
