Consumers win Qatar Airways case

Hyderabad: The Consumer Court has ordered Qatar Airways to pay Rs 45,000 to seniors in the city to compensate for “under-service”. Petitioner P. Rama Kanth sued Qatar Airways for him and his family to travel in Indigo instead of the premium airline he chose and paid for.

The petitioner complained that during the conversion period, to his surprise, the flight from Doha to Hyderabad was run by a low-cost airline (Indigo) rather than Katar Airways.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a resident of Neredmet, Rama Kanth, said: “I booked three tickets for my wife, grandson and me on Katar Airways as he headed to Hyderabad from Budapest and made a conversion in Doha.”

“My tickets show Qatar Airways flight numbers in both segments, and there is no mention of Indigo. It was only when I collected the boarding pass in Budapest that I discovered that Doha-Hyderabad’s legs were run by Indigo, operated by Indigo, owned by its own flight number… to be like any ordinary domestic flight, for example, Hyderabad to Bengaluruu.”

He explained why he filed the lawsuit, saying: “After a long correspondence with Katar Airways, I contacted the consumer court because they did not respond in the proper way. Ultimately, I had no choice but to take legal action.”

He thanked B. Uma Venkata Subba Lakshmi, president and member of the consumer dispute in Hyderabad.
