A premature newborn (three-day-old baby) suffered from respiratory distress, followed by compression caused by a large liver tumor that accounts for 70% of the abdomen, successfully underwent a rare hepatic resection procedure in a private hospital in Bangalore.

The male baby was born on February 5 in a private hospital and began to face breathing difficulties. He was immediately referred to Sacra World Hospital for further diagnosis. The baby weighs 2.18 kg at birth.

Difficulty in breathing

The doctor diagnosed that dyspnea was caused by swelling inside the abdomen, and the lungs were pressed against the lungs. The baby is placed on a ventilator. The evaluation revealed an intraperitoneal tumor whose origin is unknown.

A team of doctors at the hospital, led by Anil Kumar Pura Lingegowda, senior consultant who evaluates the baby, decided to perform surgery to eliminate swelling because of its stress effects on vital organs. The operation was performed on February 8. The baby was discharged on March 7 and performed well at follow-up.

“The swelling is caused by the left lobe of the liver, accounting for 70% of the abdominal cavity, which means the tumor is 10x8x7 cm in size. However, the challenge is to redissection the tumor, which is a very risky one, a three-day premature baby due to bleeding and low weight.”

Facing challenges

“The intraoperative phase poses a significant challenge, especially due to the need for a large amount of blood transfusions, which was led by our anesthesia and OT management team, Shishir Chandrashekhar. In addition, tumor re-cutting of the liver was successfully performed by liver transplant surgeon Shruti Reddy.”

The postoperative period is equally challenging and requires careful management to maintain homeostasis, said Shivakumar Sambargi (Pediatrics and Neonatology).

“Tumors are identified as stromal tumors, which rarely occur in neonates, and complete resection is a definite cure. Usually found in infancy, mesenchymal disorder tumors (MHLs) in the liver are a rare benign, and developmental tumors in infants are a mixture of solid and solid areas, which are in the beforerile tamige tamige tamige tamign tamign tamign tamign tamign tamign tamign, Sambargi explained.

“Managing anesthesia and blood transfusions in such a small newborn is very challenging, but our team ensures that the baby remains stable throughout the procedure,” said Dr Chandrashekar.

Doctors claim that among the world’s no reprofile of liver tumors, a three-day premature baby weighing only 2 kg.

“Liver surgery is no longer as powerful as it was decades ago. In an extreme tumor modification or transplant like this newborn or older person, now, with the latest advances in surgical technology and technology, it is now safer. Caregivers should keep open surgery in care if you can provide you with a lifetime. Reddy, transplant surgeon.
