Critical installations for strengthening safety on the Odisha coastline

“Security arrangements have been tightened at the railway station to deal with possible terrorist attacks. The armed forces have been deployed at all entrances and exits of the station. All train coaches and platforms have been inspected using metal detectors. If you see a suspicious person in a moving train or notify the police immediately within the station,” the state police department called on the people. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Friday that Odisha is potentially dangerous at sea because its coastline is 480 km long and has major facilities in Shree Jagannath Dham in Chandipur and Puri. “Although there is no specific threat to the Shree Jaganath temple in Puri, additional precautions have been taken since the terrorists opened fire in Pahalgam in J&K after they inquired about their religion,” a senior official said.
He said that the armed police officers hold positions every year at Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, where they visit the temple every year.
“The police have conducted proper inspections and annoyed devotees and asked them to cooperate. Anti-sabotage squad personnel are conducting regular inspections around the temple. The entire temple area and the town of Pilgrim are under CCTV surveillance.”
The National Security Staff (NSG) team visited Puri from May 5-6 and overseeed the security arrangements of the 12th century shrine. Officials said they reviewed existing security arrangements such as entrance and exit points, crowd management agreements, emergency response mechanisms, etc.
Puri area police sources said the hotel owners were also instructed to keep appropriate records of guests and to regularly update police officers if they find any suspicious circumstances.
The police said regular inspections of vehicles were conducted at various locations in Puri, adding that the marine fishing community had been asked to keep a close eye on the vessels.
On Friday afternoon, a high-level emergency meeting was held at ITR security in Chandipur.
The ITR site also houses DRDO’s main laboratory certification and experimental institutions (PXE).
Sources said senior police officers, DRDO officials, Coast Guard and Marine Police personnel have developed a plan to ensure proper safety plans are carried out on the ITR and Wheeler Island, where major missiles are carried out.
They said the Army Air Defense Academy near Gopalpur, the Ordnance Factory in Bolangir, INS Chilka and India Rare Earths Limited (IERL) near Chhatrapur were also strengthened.
The Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur District is Asia’s longest soil dam and has also been placed under surveillance.
Authorities at the Paradip port in Jagatsinghpur district are also on high alert, another official said.
Another official said the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Jharsuguda, two major airports in the state, also strengthened security.
He added that passengers are undergoing multi-layered security checks before boarding and advised them to arrive early to promote smooth procedures.
