Darshan skips court in Renukaswamy murder case, judge condemns absence

Bangalore: Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa made a sharp condemnation at the City Civil and Sessions Court in Bangalore on Monday during a hearing in the murder of Renkaswami on Monday. The court was dissatisfied with severe back pain after Darshan’s legal counsel informed the actor.

The presiding judge reiterated that all defendants in the case were necessary, rejecting the notion that high-profile individuals could seek immunity without valid legal reasons.

The court warned that such absences should not be routine, especially in such cases. During the litigation, Dashan’s legal team also sought to release Rs 7.5 lakh in cash that was confiscated during the residence in connection with the investigation.

The court said it will hear a response from the income tax department before deciding on the matter, and the next hearing is scheduled for May 20. The defense also filed another application for the return of cell phones seized during the investigation.

Pavithra Gowda, who was jointly examined, and several others attended the court. Pavithra was reportedly accompanied by her brother. As part of the bail conditions, all defendants must appear in court once a month.

The case is linked to the death of 33-year-old Chitradurga resident Renukaswamy, whose body was found near a storm drain in Bangalore in June 2024. Initial investigations show he had kidnapped, beaten, assaulted, and he was allegedly accused of murder by a group of men under the guidance of Darshan and others.

Renukaswamy allegedly sent an abuse message to actress Pavithra Gowda on social media, which reportedly caused an attack. He was allegedly lured to Bangalore, detained and tortured, and then succumbed to injury. Later, his body was thrown in a deserted area of the city.

Darshan and Pavithra Gowda were arrested along with several others and later released on bail. Investigations are underway, including murder, criminal conspiracy and the destruction of evidence, including multiple charges.
