The national capital Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the season on Monday as Mercury hit 40.2 degrees Celsius in the Safdarjung region – 5.1 degrees above normal.

When the maximum temperature is greater than 40 degrees Celsius and at least 4.5 degrees higher, a heat wave is declared.

The Ministry of Meteorology said that although the minimum temperature is close to normal, the maximum temperature is 2 to 4 degrees above the normal temperature in several areas of Delhi’s NCR region.

Weather in other states
In addition to Delhi, heat wave conditions are expected to affect several states in central and northern India, including Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and western Uttar Pradesh.
