Amid the probation sentence of Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar, the Delhi court provided her with one year probation in a defamation case filed against her by LG VK Saxena in Delhi on Tuesday (8 April 2025).
In the case filed in 2000, Ms. Patkar appealed her conviction and a five-month verdict, and additional meeting judge Vishal Singh said he had considered Ms. Patkar’s age, the gravity of the crime, and she had not been convicted before.
The judge also reduced the fine of Ms Patka from 70-year-old to 10,000 rupees.

Probation is a non-institutional approach to treating criminals. This is a conditional suspension of the sentence, where the offender releases the offender due to the constraints of good conduct, rather than sending the offender to jail.
Last week, the court upheld the Judicial Court order, sentenced to defamation.
Mr. Saxena filed a defamatory press release against Mr. Saxena on 24 November 2000 against Mr. Saxena, the Chairman of the National Civil Liberties Commission.
On May 24 last year, a judicial court pointed out that Ms. Patkar’s statement called Saxena a “coward” and accused him of participating in the Hahara deal, not only as a defamatory nature itself, but also as aroused negative views of him.
Furthermore, the allegation of the complainant “mortgage” the Gujarat people and their resources to foreign interests is a direct attack on his integrity and public service.
The sentencing argument was completed on May 30, followed by a sentence for the sentence on June 7.
On July 1, the court sentenced her to a simple prison sentence of five months, and Ms. Patka then appealed in the conference court.
