Congress attacked the center on Sunday (May 18, 2025) for alleged mismatch between the official Covid-19 deaths reflected in the civil registration system data and the number reflected, saying the administration regrets its “Tone-Deaf” action that is too much, but when history is written, it is certainly a record of the behavior of the benefit.

Secretary-General Jairam Ramesh, Secretary-General of the Congress, said five years ago that the world was destroyed by the pandemic on the 19th.

“It’s obvious that even at that moment, India suffered damage on a scale we haven’t seen in over a century,” he said on X.

“From the immigration crisis to the shortage of vaccines produced, from mass deaths and oxygen shortages to the Prime Minister’s insistence on running in West Bengal instead of prioritizing human life – the despicable, meanest impulses of the Modi government – on display during the pandemic.”

“Although we have always known that the government has systematically reported Covid-19 deaths, we now understand that in 2021 alone, India has reported another 2 million deaths.”

Mr Ramesh said most of these could be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic, an estimated 2 million times that of the official Covid Death Tally.

He claimed that the Gujarat Prime Minister’s hometown had achieved doubtful ranges to reduce deaths with a startling range – the death toll was reported to be 33 times higher than the Gujarat government recognized.

“It is expected that this government will regret or repent for its deaf and dumb actions, but when history is written, this depraved behavior will be recorded.”

Earlier this month, official sources said India’s cumulative excess death rate in 2020-2021 was 9.3% higher than expected deaths, a figure lower than the United States, Italy and Russia.

Sources noted that even in the years leading up to the 2020 Covid-19 outbreak, the number of deaths recorded in the CRS has been increasing.

They also said that the annual increase in deaths registered in the CRS may be attributed to several reasons, including a larger cohort of people, a mature reporting process, and increased awareness of registration demand, resulting in higher levels of registration.
