The Disabled Persons on Tuesday (9 April 2025) criticized Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan for allegedly referring to “persons with disabilities” in a recent public meeting “in a derogatory way”.

Nethrodaya, a social service agency based in Chennai, has filed a complaint against the New Delhi Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) (CCPD) to the Minister of New Delhi. The complaint said: “The derogatory remarks that the cathedral occupies a key position in the state government violate the principles of social justice advocated by the Dravidian-type role model government.”

The group added: “The insults and degradation of the community are very offensive and unreasonable. We ask the CCPD to file a legal action against the elected representative, demanding their intentional derogatory remarks.”

The Association for the Rights of Tamil Nadu has also condemned the minister’s remarks. In a statement, they asked Mr. Duraimurugan to publicly apologize to the people and his statement should be withdrawn. A member of the Disabled Persons Rights Alliance Smitha Sadasivan said: “Under the rights of the Disabled Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, a ridiculous statement against persons with disabilities is a crime.
